This place is seriously amazing. I now bring all my out of state friends here for a very enjoyable brunch to prove to them I don't live in hickville. Brunch is delicious - even better than NYC, in my opinion. I made reservations just to be safe which is very easy to do. Our waiter was warm, friendly, professional, and had a great sense of humor. I highly recommend trying their toasted blueberry muffin, which just melts in your mouth. I still dream about that muffin and I'm not even a muffin lover. I had the Oscar omlete, which hosted crab and a hollandaise sauce. And I have two words - Rosemary. Potatoes. Freaking delicious. I really appreciate the quality of food here for the price and I can't wat to try dinner soon!

I have to apologize. I have been calling this town Port Decrepit for years. Just have to stop, its not correct anymore. This restaurant was real nice, the owner/chef checked out the tables, the hostess checked on us and the wait staff was prompt and helpful. Wish I had been more hungry, not just wanting a appetizer and beer. I get back up there, will work this into my routine.

Excellent. Sea Bass only outdone by the mushroom soup and salad. Good service, reasonable prices and good wine.

I like to consider myself somewhat of a foodie, today we came to Backfin for brunch. I was in the mood for lunch and my husband wanted breakfast. I opted for the French Dip and the waitress offered a variety of different cheeses for the sandwich, so I chose Brie. Well, I must say it truly made the sandwich, it would have been good with another cheese I am sure, but the creaminess and flavor of the Brie blended so well and perfected it! The drink of the day was a Grapefruit Crush and since that's one of my favorites I of course had to get one. It was honestly one of the best I have had! My husband got one of the specials of the day which was blueberry stuffed French Toast, which was excellent! It was filled with fresh blueberries and had a perfect balance, not overly sweet, which was nice. Today makes our 4th visit to Backfin and we have never been disappointed. The service is always spectacular and the food is top-notch! The brunch is reasonably priced but the dinners are a little more pricey, however you get what you pay for. In my eyes, the meals have been worth every penny, but if you are looking to save a couple dollars sometimes you can find a Living Social deal. Backfin is on my top list of favorite restaurants so don't pass up if you have the chance to go!

Dined here with an old college friend that I'd not seen in 20 years. Great atmosphere, attentive service, wonderful food. Overall, the location only added to the pleasure of the evening as we caught up on the past couple of decades.

Dinner was delicious. I had the Prime Rib with mashed sweet potatoes and julienne sliced zucchini. We started our meal with a cup of Lobster Bisque. Everything was seasoned perfectly and perfectly prepared. The owner and chef came out to greet us. We had a marvelous time.

We yelped this place on our drive back from DC and are so glad we did. Loved discovering the adorable town of Port Deposit, and Backfin was divine. Terrific service, and my husband raved about literally everything he ate, from the crab louis appetizer to the crab cake ("best ever") to the mashed sweet potatoes and Kahuna cake. My chicken wrap was good but not spectacular, but that's probably what I get for such uninventive ordering. Terrific atmosphere, friendly patrons, and Sunday football on TV topped off the experience- we will be back!

Yessss. Brunch date with my daughter (10 & picky) Loved everything! Ordered the Shrimp Lejon, Crab Louis, Chef Pizza... I could drink the sauce on the Crab Louis...!!! So freakin good. My daughters quesadilla was huge- loads of leftovers. Will definitely be back and make a day of it; same exit at Hollywood Casino...

Chef Bob and gang are amazing. Food is out of this world. The staff are so friendly and Chef Bob makes sure he greets you sometime during your meal.

For a tiny town, you wouldn't expect a culinary experience like this place to exist. The chef here is clearly well trained, well traveled, and intent on bringing a somewhat po-dunk town like Port Deposit into the hipster food revolution. Fresh ingredients, possibly locally sourced-definitely in the case of the blue crab- and innovative methods come together to bring customers appetizers like pork empanadas and entrees involving local Kennett Square mushrooms. Yum. And of course you can get crab meat in almost anything. I had a simple omelette, but my husband has Hawaiian french toast that smelled heavenly. The mimosas were on point, as well. My mom had the crab asparagus omelette, which looked amazing and tasted great if you were judging how quickly she cleared her plate!! Overall, a must-go if you are in the area. You can't beat local crab dishes done exceptionally well.

Hit traffic on 95 driving from DC to NJ and discovered this hidden gem. The food was outstanding and the service was great as well. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection. The head chef Bob even came out to thank us. Highly recommended!

What can I say? Spectacular. My partner and I were en route to Philly from Virginia in traffic, and missed the exit for Havre de Grace...so we took the first exit on 222 and came down the hill to Port Deposit. Back Fin Blues is in an old storefront on Main Street with plank floors and a few tables squeezed in next to the kitchen. Parking was tricky, but walking into Back Fin is like stepping back in time...the building dates to the late 1800's. I ordered blackened barrundi with roasted brussel sprouts and fingerling potatoes while my girlfriend ordered crab cakes with an Asian mango sauce and a double portion of brussel sprouts. We topped it off with a '10 Chilean Sauvignon Blanc. Every morsel was superb, including the house green salad and the freshly baked rye rolls. 5 stars!

I had never heard of Port Deposit before, and was driving through en route home to NYC, and this restaurant single handedly put this town on the map for me. I will be stopping in every time I drive south on 95. It is that spectacular and easily rivals the best steak houses. The upmost professional and knowledgable staff and the most delicious filet I have ever eaten. I highly recommend the Pork Belly app if they have it.

Awesome food, relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. Our steaks were cooked perfectly, and even the side dishes stood out. Our server, Allison, was very attentive and made great recommendations. We'll definitely be back soon!

My husband, 8 month old son and I decided to try Backfin Blues last minute after the Darlington Fourth of July Parade. We did not have a reservation but the staff was overly friendly about making room for us. They sat us out on their covered deck which was warm but nice to not have the sun baking you. We ordered the soft shell crab appetizer which was amazing! My husband ordered the scallops entree which had a croissant type breading over a large creamy boat of scallops... Let's just say he is still dreaming about it the next day!! I ordered the lobster ravioli with chicken and cream sauce... Sooo delicious!! Both came with side salads with your choice of dressing. We chose the homemade blue cheese.. So worth it. My son ate the mashed sweet potatoes :) which were also amazing!!! In the end the chef came out to greet us and check in on how everything went, which does not happen often at restaurants any more. Our total bill was about 90.00 before tip with a bottle of wine. Backfin Blues is worth every penny and we will definitely be going back!!

Our first visit...such a pleasant surprise and only 15 mins away. My husband had the special scallops and a deckle steak which was excellent! I had the Chilean sea bass which was very good and uniquely prepared. The atmosphere was casual and upbeat. Cameron, our waiter was terrific!

This is a good quality restaurant in a Micky mouse town...chef knows what he's doing...food is Asian influenced...4 stars! Stopped in for brunch...had the creamed chipped beef on a biscuit...very good as were the hash browns...wife had the shrimp omelet...which, aside from the fact that there were minimal shrimp in it, she enjoyed...

  • Denise J.

Amazing food! The locals bring an awesome atmosphere. My husband and I didn't want to leave. The chef/owner took the time to say hello which creates a charm that most restaurants forget about. We will be back, friends from Alexandria VA

  • Samantha C.

Really good food. The atmosphere is very home-like but also very much like a pub. I got the stuffed shrimp, which came with a decent sized salad, grilled veggies, and a starch (I picked garlic mashed potatoes). For $28, I was stuffed and had plenty of left overs. It's far from my house, but if I'm in the area, I will definitely be going back. The only minor minor complaint I have has nothing to do with the food nor the service of the restaurant (which are most important anyways), the floors were squeaky and you could feel each step anyone was taking. And we sat by the back of the restaurant, and it was still quite chilly, and the women's bathroom doesn't have doors! The stalls are separated by shower curtains! Nothing wrong, just weird haha

Best seafood I have ever had. Food was absolutely incredible and deserves every penny I paid for it. The crab cakes and ahi tuna special were just perfect, there's just no other way to say it. Pony up the dough and treat yourself to some real Maryland seafood, it couldn't be more worth it.

Dined here for the first time tonight, and do believe it will be the first of many. Wow! A true culinary delight. What a gem of a resturant nestled in Port Deposit. A place I normally would drive right past. The owner/Chef Bob is present, frequently moving around the dining room, shaking hands, sharing stories. This incredibly personable man loves what he does and it shows. He is his restaurant, outstanding. Appetizers ordered were the pork belly (crispy heaven), Fire and Ice ( the fresh peppered salmon and wasabi sauce were perfect partners) and the soup was so flavorful. Loved that the soup was served in a real cup! Entrees we all enjoyed were the Chilean Sea Bass (melt in your mouth awesomeness) , the Steak special , the spinach fontina ravioli and Blackened Fish. I heard alot of yums ... I also upgraded my salad to a beet feta salad that was incredible. The boys in the group ordered the lava cakes for dessert. Our waitress JESSICA was a doll. She was friendly, attentive and knowledgable. I love when you are made to feel like you are the only customers in the place when every table is full. The food is amazing without the pretense of similar resturants of this caliber. Bravo!

I do not know where to begin. Have been to many 5 star restaurants and this one is the best kept secret. GREAT food in a laid back atmosphere. The food and service was so outstanding, I wanted to keep this little jewel to myself but the food and service was so outstanding, I wanted to tell EVERYONE about it. LOL!!! Celebrated my 48th Birthday. Chef Bob and his staff made me feel awesome!!! I no longer need to go to Philly or DC for a celebratory meal. Everything from the homemade salad dressing, lobster bisque, soft shell crab, pecan pie...OMG!! I can't wait to try their brunch!!! It's definitely a must do place to visit.

Great service. Kid friendly. Chef came out and welcomed us to the place. Appetizer mahi fish taco was delish! We splurged and did the ribeye and the veal oscar. Kids fried fish and fries des both our kids. (Which is great considering it was 12 bucks.) I would recommend, a bit pricy but ended up being worth it.

This place was outstanding The fact that the chef loves what he is doing tells you he takes great pride in his cooking. Small warm cozy place not to fancy but also not a dump by any means The food was very good and cooked to perfection The wife and I will be back to this place many more times.

Wow! What a place. Back fun blues is hidden in the quiet town of port deposit and definitely worth heading to even if it's out if your way. My girlfriend and I went last night. We made reservations for 7:30 for dinner. We we greeted by a friendly hostess and taken to our table out on the deck. We were all by ourselves which was nice. Our waitress Kiera was awesome and recommended a great drink (grapefruit/gin) for my girlfriend to try which she loved. We started off with the shrimp lejone which was a nice app to start off with. Crisp bacon, hot shrimp- can't go wrong. As a main course I got a special which was the lamb chops. They were cooked perfectly. I have honestly never had better cooked lamb. The three nice sized lamb chops came with a salad and two sides. I recommend the garlic mashed potatoes. My girlfriend had the crab cakes which were fantastic. We will be back here for sure. Great food, fantastic staff, and deck for sitting outside. Check it out.

Nice little restaurant in Port Deposit. The menu selections aren't anything fancy- mostly traditional Maryland seafood dishes. BUT, my crab cakes were fantastic. The service was good and the prices were great. SOLID dining experience in a town (and county) where those are few and far between!

We had heard good things about the restaurant and it did not disappoint. The service and food was spectacular, and the greeting from the chef was an added bonus. Good basic wine list, nothing earth shattering but some decent choices, reasonably priced. Great selection of micro brews and some good cocktails. Shrimp Lehjon is a must have and we ordered a second helping as the first went quick. Crab soup had a great flavor, and the oysters Rockefeller was really good. Our table had the prime rib which was really tasty. The stuffed shrimp should be crab stuffed with shrimp, tons of crab meat and great flavor. One of the specials was grilled meatloaf, which had a great flavor and was well done. Nice twist on meatloaf and well worth ordering. The last dinner was the beef short ribs, well done very flavorful. All in all a great meal and a great place. Highly recommend it, but make a reservation. You can chance it during the week, but we hear its packed on weekends.

Fantastic place! Lovely little town, great atmosphere, complex, intelligent, and well made foods, what's more to ask? I especially love their breakfasts. Next time you're there try the cream chipped beef, and a raspberry iced tea! Stick to your ribs food!

  • Susi B.

Overall a very nice dinner! Good food and good service. Glad we had reservations! I had the specials - Tempura Soft Shell Crab - DELICIOUS and the entree was the Bistro Sirloin - Excellent flavor and tenderness. Our waitress was very attentive. All four at the table was very pleased. The only negative item was some of the cooking smells - since there really is no separation from the kitchen and the restaurant. We will definitely go back.

First time coming here. I had the stuffed African Lobster tail and it was absolutely delicious. My wife had the spinnach and fontina ravioli and loved it as well. Definitely worth the trip. Bathrooms were clean and the staff was friendly!

Oh. My. God. After reading the reviews, I was definitely excited to try this place, but I still figured it would just be a really good seafood joint and from the outside it looks that way. Like a down home, Marylander's kind of place. It sits right off the Susquehanna and is a little hard to find if you're not paying attention. This was the best meal I'd had in probably 2 months. Our waitress was very pleasant and knowledgeable and after she got our drink order in, the head chef and owner came over to our table and shook mine and my friends hands. We both ordered appetizers. I got the asian crab cake because it came with a mango sauce. I'm not partial to crab cakes because I don't like mayonnaise. This crab cake was decadent like a dessert. Flakey, crusted outside, soft, moist and delicious inside. The meals we ordered came with a side salad, which was brought out before the entre. I normally dread the salads because they're too big, plain and bland. This was a nice, delicate salad with fresh baby romaine and spinach, with juicy tomatoes and crunchy, flavorful croûtons. Then came dinner. I ordered the Chilean Sea bass which came in a mushroom sauce with a choice of a bunch of sides, I got garlic mashed potato's and mixed greens. When it came out, I was surprised by how small it was but it was packed with flavor, perfectly cooked and left me feeling comfortable, not stuffed. My buddy got skate cheeks which were really good, sweet and tender. Between the service, the relaxed atmosphere and the amazing food, we walked out of there very happy. It is a bit pricey so don't go there expecting to spend 20-30 bucks on a meal. But you're paying for some quality food. The entire staff is very friendly, even the line cooks waved goodbye and told us to have a goodnight as we left. I'll definitely be going back again.

I stopped for Sunday brunch and ordered the soft crab sandwich with rosemary home fries. The meal was plated great and was cooked perfect. I did have to wait some time to get seated on the patio outdoors. Overall, the experience was awesome!

We were greeted by extremely friendly staff who seated us immediately even though we didn't have a reservation. Our server was a smiling, bubbly young woman named Kiara (not sure if it's spelled right) who took our drink orders and went over the appetizer specials. for appetizers we chose pork belly confit and calamari. The pork belly was a nice combination of flavors: a sweet sauce on the crispy 1/2" thick bacon paired really well with pickled onions and arugula. The calamari was hand cut and very lighted breaded and fried and served with a nice chunky marinara. This is NOT your standard mound of frozen, rubbery, over cooked squid. It melts in your mouth. Appetizer portion sizes were perfect. For entrees we chose a pork chop stuffed with goats milk cheese and bread stuffing served with roasted Brussels sprouts, and a lamb and butternut squash stew server over pumpkin ravioli. The chop was cooked medium to medium well, which is how I prefer pork. The lamb and squash in the savory stew were tender and delicious, and perfectly offset by the sweetness of the pumpkin ravioli. For dessert we had turtle cheesecake with vanilla ice cream. Every bite of this meal was delicious. And the service was extraordinary. Keeper!

I'm giving this place very VERY high marks in all categories! I came upon this brick front antique store look alike building by way of my wife who found it by accident. We love trying new places, and in this case we were searching for a crab house. This place is definitely NOT a crab house. We had read info about the restaurant's history and learned the owner is the Chef. We were surprised to learn that he works elsewhere full time, and runs the Back Fin Blues only as a hobby each weekend from Thurs-Sun. Believe me when I say this Chef has evolved his hobby to a point where this reviewer is convinced that keeping a subtle but distinct line between work and hobby breeds multitudes of layers in flavor and creativity in the menu. I hope this Chef never grows weary of his hobby. You too will instantly taste and see, as i do, that he must be thinking all week during his day job about his upcoming weekend of putting smiles on the faces of his restaurant customers. For a hobby, owning a weekend restaurant is an ambitious undertaking, but this guy is really good at it. Our waiter (Patrick) was awesome! He was very professional and extremely attentive. On to the food... Order the Crab Louie. You won't be disappointed! For dinner, I ordered the filet, and I opted to add a crab cake. My wife ordered the twin crab cakes. We both ordered salads, the fingerling potatoes, and the grilled zucchini. As a steak lover, I was overwhelmingly impressed with the thick cut of beef centered on my plate. The grand manier sauce mixed with the beef juices as I ate, and I smiled the entire time. The crab cakes are broiled, and though they seemd to be slightly more loose in the middle than we expected, they were still within the realm of outstanding. We were both stuffed and felt extremely satisfied when Patrick cleared the table and brought over the bill. Our shared appetizer, and our dinner including two non-alcoholic beers was $99.00. Be sure to make a reservation because we did see people being turned away. Do it now, and get up to Port Deposit soon before the Chef decides to take up golfing on the weekends for his next hobby!

This was a pleasant night out. The food was excellent, the owner/chef Bob greeted us personally, which was very nice. I might add that we had tried to get reservations, but choose not to leave a message. Later, we found out that was the thing to do. I had the crab cakes, and they were done perfectly, my husband had the Sea Bass Blackened and was quite pleased. Would definitely go back again... But call for reservations...

We were very excited to try Back Fin as we were told how wonderful it is. For the price, we were not impressed. We ordered the Calamari and thought it was chewy and bland. We also had a bowl of lobster bisque. It wasn't hot and we did not have any chunks of lobster in it. The flavor was very good though. As a main, I ordered the Veal Oscar. It was smothered in room temperature Hollandaise sauce and lacked flavor in general. It was not good. Overall, if the meal was half the price that would have been more reasonable. Cool place though.

Terrific little restaurant worth the visit to Port Deposit. Chef Bob is a friendly man with a flair for delicious food. Usually something great in the way of seafood, fresh vegetables, interesting sauces and a nice wine list. A little pricey, but the food is worth it and the service good, too.

If you're going to drop a hundo on supper that's WORTHY of spending a hundo, there's only a few places in the area to do so. It's slim pickin's near Rising Sun, MD for decent food, but Backfin answers the need. Sample craft beers, a good selection of wines, and a delicious crab Louis appetizer before diving into their dinner specials which include wild caught fresh fish and high quality meats. They're closed Monday and Tuesday, but try to go in the summer when you can sit out on the deck and get a (partial) view of the Susquehanna River. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable and the owner will usually come and introduce himself at your table. Ambiance is good at this small restaurant and the prices are commensurate with the quality. Two alcoholic drinks (glass of Riesling & craft beer), three appetizers (crab louis, ahi tuna & cup of broccoli cheddar), two dinners (pan seared scallops special & duck breast special) and a shared dessert (carrot layer cake) will run you $100, which is hard to beat.

After driving over an hour (from Delco) to Port Deposit,MD (where?!?) to drop off a fostered dog, (to an amazing home!) the new puppy dad said that if we wanted a great meal and cocktail to go to the BFB "downtown" along the Susquahana River And excuse me . . . NOT a Mickey Mouse town...but a sweet mini-sized Manyunky type of town. Not many around like it I don't think. Anyway, we were met at the door by an almost overly sweet, welcoming hostess/waitress and shown to their cozy bar. Looked at the menu which was pretty interesting on selections but thought we'd just head on home to local place. UNTIL they told us their specials. OK, we didn't do the specials, but rather ordered off the menu. Partner had steak au poive, I had the sea bass. I actually don't know what I liked best, the teeny, tiny taste partner gave me of filet, or my seabass topped with some kind of creamy mushroom sauce, or my broiled cauliflower, or my fingerling baked potatoes, or even the flavorful warm roll. Bartender was appalled as I picked the plate up and licked it clean. (only kidding - I actually took some home for lunch today - the hell with the dog) (I'll lick the plate in the privacy of my own home) This place might be overpriced for the MD crowd, but I found it a bargain. Dinner for 2, 2 g&t's, a craft beer, a glass of wine, and 3 "tastes" of 3 different types of white wine - came to $90. Chatting with the friendly wait-staff/bartender - priceless! I will probably never make a 50 mile trip for dinner anytime soon, but if I'm close by I will certainly go there again, and if you're in the area - go! A short hop off of I-95.

Went for dinner tonight with friends food was great, service was great, not much of a dessert list. I could have used something chocolate, or some ice cream nothing fancy. But the dessert was not appealing. I would go back. We saved our waist line.

From San Diego but visiting family in Baltimore and stopped in this quaint, small town restuarant for a drink while on a day trip. Arrived at 4:15 while the staff was setting up for their 5PM Sat night opening but warmly welcomed in for a drink at the bar. We advised we were just passing through and not that hungry but being a foody, had to ask for a menu. The owner/chef (Bob) came out and introduced himself and we got to talking about Scallops which are a favorite of mine and learned they are fresh & never frozen, like all of their seafood. He made us a special black been asian style seared Scallop appetizer (off menu) which was as good, if not the best I have ever had. Service and Scallops were 100% great!

What a great gem in Port Deposit! Stopped there last night b/c of all the cars and the smell...wow, we were taken back when we walked in and saw a very hip restuarant/bar and it was packed! We grabbed a seat at the bar, had a few drinks and had two appetizers, the tuna and calamari. Both were excellent. The menu had great delicious entrees and even awesome dessert. The service was great, the vibe was great, the owner was great! He came out when he had a second to breath as the cook, and introduced himself to us, as we heard he tries to do nightly. They are only open on weekends b/c he has a full time job and this is just his passion. Let's hope this passion continues as we will definitely be back, we heard the brunch was awesome as well. They have a small deck on back that overlooks the railroad tracks and the susquahanna. Can't wait to cross over the dam and head back to this great find on a warm summer evening! If you are heading towards Port Deposit, you have to make this one of your spots to stop! Keep doing it right BackFin!

Great Restaurant! All of their food is fantastic and prepared with the freshest seafood. I have never had a bad meal from BackFin's and look forward to their lobster stuffed salmon each time I go! The staff is extremely nice and the owners really care that their customers are satisfied. A great place to go when you are driving through the Port!
